About 46 years ago, when I was 15, I lived in a small rural village and had just started going to secondary school.
Every day, I had to travel three kilometres each way. Sometimes I hitchhiked, but that wasn't always easy. To get to school, I had to cross a mountainous area, and being such a young girl, finding a convenient way to get around wasn't always simple.
So one day, my father and I went to a scrapyard.
We bought two identical motorcycles, old ones, very old ones... and together, we managed to build one working motorcycle using the parts we could salvage from each of them.
It was a Rieju, one of those motorcycles that seem so far away from us today, but which, back then, represented a gateway to something much bigger for me.
The fuel tank area was quite worn, so I decided to paint it yellow.
And I gave it a name: Yogurtera.
With that motorcycle, something more than just my daily journey to school began. In a way, it marked the beginning of my leaving home and finding my own path towards independence.
I needed to start earning my own money so I could pay for at least the petrol, as well as my schoolbooks and other things I needed.
That's why, so many years later, I've wanted to bring that image back to life.
Today, I'm going to turn the image of that 15-year-old girl and her Yogurtera into a keyring.
And I'm going to hang it from my car keys.
Because, even though 46 years have passed, I want to keep that girl with me — the girl who was just beginning to discover that she could forge her own path.
La Yogurtera
